Our museum’s regional mandate covers the territories of the Dish with One Spoon Covenant Wampum, the McKee Treaty (Treaty 2, 1790), the Between the Lakes Treaty (1792), London Township Treaty (Treaty 6, 1796), Sombra Township Treaty (Treaty 7, 1796), Longwoods Treaty (Treaty 21, 1822) and Treaty 29 (Huron Tract, 1827). Many diverse First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples call this area and the city home, helping to strengthen and shape the community. Standing 7-8 feet tall and 10-15 feet long, the covered wagons of yesteryear were symbols of freedom. These are the Chippewas of the Thames First Nation, Oneida Nation of the Thames, and Munsee Delaware Nation. These sturdy wagons carried pioneer families and all their worldly goods across the uncharted terrain of America. These Nations have longstanding relationships with the land and place we now recognize as Middlesex County.
